The key to keeping a word untranslated is mainly for the reason that by itself the word holds a deep meaning. Such as every fansubber of One Piece following k-f's decision with the word Nakama. Words (important to the story and its context) that are not easily translated, or have multiple meanings should understandably be left as is. At times this should be done with issues like religious texts, but I digress as a topic like that is better left alone.

In the case of baka I would say the 30 different ways it can be used, lol.
Hentai is also another one. There is the noun reference which we all know, the adjective which can be estranged (also mildly perverted) to extreme pervesion in the sense (such as "WTF YOU SHOTACON (LOLICON) WEIRDO!?!?!?!")

i say leave the words japenese in they sound better and ive like read 60 or so manga i know im a loser ok but the simple words like baka and uresai make the story fun

I'd say stick with the japanese easy words. I've lost count of how many times stuff like this is integral to some plot developments (much like suffixes like -san and -kun are important in indicating the intimacy between any two characters).
Why translate (potentially) vital information into english when the majority of readers already know what it means? I think it's silly to translate every little thing, as a lot of wordplay gets lost in translation (think about all those wonderful puns in Mx0!)

Sure, I'm sorry if ya got the wrong message...I don't dislike American comic,its style or anything. I'm just saying that the uniqueness of the manga and its distinguish-ability are compromised 'in my opinion' by eliminating these commonplace Japanese words. No hard feelings? |
